Research strategy at the NTC ranges from the development of technology using diverse materials to the implementation of the most advanced functionalities in multiple applications.
Our research activity starts from the study of basic materials and technological processes - focussed on silicon. We use various materials to design (using simulation) and build micro/nanostructures based on high-index-contrast waveguides and planar photonic crystals. These structures implement functionalities in many application fields: including telecommunications (including all-optical routers), defence, radio-over-fibre systems, sensors, and biophotonics.
The NTC is multidisciplinary. The center makes photonic materials and devices (including photonic integrated circuits on silicon) and offers micro/nanofabrication processes to companies from other sectors - including ceramics, metallurgy, textile, graphic arts, and agriculture.
